Austria, Finland & Norway Win Gold at Paralympics

INTERNATIONAL: Austria, Finland & Norway each walked away with a gold medal from Paralympics men’s giant slalom competitions on Thursday (March 10).

Norway’s Jesper Pederson nabbed his third gold of the Beijing Games when he clocked in the fastest time in the men’s giant slalom sitting competition.

Pederson came in just over three seconds ahead of Italian Rene de Silvestro who took silver with China’s Liang Zilu taking bronze.

The 22-year-old Norwegian had previously taken home gold medals in the super-G and super combined competitions.

In the men’s giant slalom vision-impaired competition it was Johannes Aigner who took the gold home for Austria.

The 16-year-old beat out Italy’s Giacomo Bertagnolli and Slovakia’s Miroslav Haraus, who took silver and bronze respectively, to take home his second gold medal from Beijing after previously having won the downhill.

Finland’s Santeri Kiiveri came back to beat Charles Walsh of the United States in the men’s giant slalom standing competition.

Walsh had clocked the fastest time in the first leg, but Kiiveri overtook him in the second leg to take the gold leaving Walsh with the silver.

Arthur Bauchet of France took home the bronze medal.
